Beginning October 2013 SOASCIS conducts a new series of seminars open to UBD staff and the public, called Post-Conference Seminar. Its main objective is to enable SOASCIS academics, who have presented papers at international seminars/conferences to present them again at UBD at a post-conference seminar for the benefit of the campus community.
The first seminar in the series was given by Associate Professor Dr Jabal M. Buaben on 8 October 2013 at SOASCIS Meeting Room. He presented his paper entitled “Faith or Culture: Finding Identity Today – A Muslim Perspective,” which was first delivered at 40th International Students Conference for Dialogue among Jews, Christians and Muslims in Europe held in Bonn, Germany in March 2013.
The second seminar was given by Professor Datuk Dr Osman Bakar on 16 October 2013 at ILIA Auditorium. His paper titled “Islam as a Shaping Force of Cultural Identity in Southeast Asia: the Case of the Malay-Islamic Identity” was first presented at the Conference on Islam in Asia held at Al-Akhawayn University, Ifrane, Morocco on 19-20 June 2013 and organised by the University’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
